A Cavity. It’s one of the biggest concerns our patients with children have. Every day, we have parents who ask us if there is anything else they can do to help prevent cavities, on top of brushing and flossing regularly. Something we may suggest are sealants.
A sealant is a protective coating put on the back teeth, easily and quickly by the dentist. While your child must still brush and floss on a regular basis, this is an extra measure to try to prevent cavities.
As far as the process goes, it’s completely painless and fast. Plus, while it’s covering the tooth to help prevent food particles to get through, your dentist can still see the tooth, and can check to make sure no cavities are forming.
If you’re wondering if sealants are something an adult can get as well, the answer is yes. However, the earlier the better. First molars arrive at around age 6, with the second around age 12. The best time to get the sealant is as soon as those molars arrive.
Studies show sealants reduces the risk of decay by almost 80%! If this is something you would like to know is best for your child, ask Dr. Huslig or Dr. Jhawer during your next visit.
